太极 tàijí noun Supreme Ultimate 太极Taiji (also t'ai chi, ‘Supreme Ultimate’), the ultimate origin of the cosmos in Chinese philosophy. According to the Yijing (→ 《易经》), Taiji is the primordial source of activity and creativity from which yin and yang arise. Philosophers are divided over whether Taiji is material or immaterial. A martial arts master in the Qing Dynasty adopted the concepts of yin and yang to introduce a style of martial arts known as taijiquan (太极拳). |
