大跃进 Dàyuèjìn noun Great Leap Forward 大跃进A plan launched in 1958 by the Chinese Communist Party. The aim was to bring about sweeping economic and social reforms, with a view to transforming China into a modern, industrialized Communist state. The party hoped that within 15 years or less China would catch up with or overtake Great Britain in industrial production. People’s communes were set up, and a mass movement was launched to smelt steel and boost grain production. The policy was abandoned in 1960, and today it is considered both in China and abroad as having caused major economic collapse, as well as a humanitarian disaster in which many millions of people died of famine. |
