屏风 pínɡfēnɡ noun screen ▸ 竖起屏风 put up a screen 屏风A screen placed in a room to block draughts, provide concealment, divide a room, or for decoration. Screens already existed in the Zhou Dynasty. After the Eastern Jin period, screens began to be decorated with paintings and calligraphy. There are two types of screen. The free-standing screen (座屏风) is made up of one or more decorated screens on a pedestal. The folding screen (围屏) is made up of an even number of panels and is placed on the floor in a zigzag to provide stability. Smaller folding screens, placed on a kang (→ 炕) for decoration, are known as kang screens. |
