方言 fānɡyán noun dialect ▸ 本地方言 native dialect 中国方言There are generally considered to be seven main Chinese dialects: Mandarin (as spoken in northern China), Wu (as spoken in Shanghai, south-east Jiangsu and Zhejiang), Yue (Cantonese, as spoken in Guangdong and Hong Kong), Xiang (as spoken in Hunan), Hakka (as spoken in southern China and by the Chinese diaspora), Min (as spoken in Fujian), and Gan (as spoken in Jiangxi). Mandarin is the most widely distributed, and is spoken by over 70% of the Chinese population. Today's Mandarin (‘putonghua’or standard Chinese) has its origins in the Beijing dialect. It is known in Taiwan as guoyu (国语). |
